Google Maps Optimisation for Tradies: Why Ranking on Google Isn’t Only an SEO Project

Google Maps24 September 20262 min read

When people talk about “ranking on Google” for a trade business, they are usually picturing two different results at once: the standard search results, and the map with three highlighted businesses above them. Improving one does not automatically improve the other.

Two different rankings, two different rulebooks

Traditional organic SEO, content, technical site health, backlinks, drives position in the standard search results. The Local Pack, the map and three listings shown for local-intent searches, is driven primarily by your Google Business Profile: category accuracy, completeness, review volume and recency, and proximity to the searcher. A trade business can genuinely rank well in one and be invisible in the other.

Why this matters more for urgent trade searches

Searches like “electrician near me” or “emergency plumber” skew heavily toward the map pack, because Google reads that phrasing as wanting the closest, fastest option, not necessarily the most authoritative website. Treating this purely as a content problem misses where the real visibility opportunity actually lives.

What actually moves the map pack

Accurate, consistent business information, name, address, phone, service area, matched across your website and your profile; the right primary and secondary categories rather than the broadest possible one; genuine, recent reviews; and photos and posts that keep the profile active rather than dormant.

Where this connects back to the website

A Google Business Profile that ranks well but links through to a page that does not confirm the service, area and trust signals the searcher expects will still lose the enquiry. Maps visibility gets you found, the page still has to close the interest.

This is part of the local-search work built into every trade pillar we run, see how it applies for electricians, plumbers, roofers and concreters, alongside the broader local SEO approach.

Frequently asked questions

Do more reviews always beat better reviews?

Volume and recency both carry real weight, but review content matters too, service-specific detail mentioning the actual trade or suburb can help more than a high star rating with no substance.

Can a business rank in the map pack without a physical storefront?

Yes, for service-area businesses that do not serve customers at a business address, Google has a specific profile setup for this, but proximity to the searcher still factors into ranking.
